WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE US TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Maja Renn is an interdisciplinary artist. Her ephemeral, constantly evolving performances are minimalist modular compositions made of movement, drawing, text and video. Playfully they underline, shift and erase lines and contact surfaces between perceived categories of being. Born in 1990 in Wrocław (Poland),
Maja completed her curriculum with the post-graduate programme in artistic practice at the CCA Tbilisi (Georgia) and a Master in Art Praxis at the Dutch Art Institute (Netherlands). In 2014 she founded an experimental artist residency DE LICEIRAS 18 in Porto (Portugal) which she is still the head of.
After a couple of nomadic years she has now settled in Zürich, where she works as an assistant director at the Schauspielhaus theatre and takes further training in contemporary dance.
HOW DID THE COVID-19 BREAKDOWN AFFECT YOUR WORK AS AN ARTIST?
During the lockdown I became increasingly interested in feelings of longing, distance and absence as well as in the meaning of touch and questioning the concept of the other as opposed to oneself.
HAS YOUR WAY OF THINKING/PRODUCING ART CHANGED? IN WHAT WAY?
The limitation of space and physical separation made me look for smaller forms of movement and alternative ways to keep in touch.
ABOUT THE BITE
In response to the open call I prepared for you a multi-course menu in form of an open-studio website. Main ingredients I used are movement, photography, drawing, text and video. All ingredients were sustainably produced in Zürich, during the two months of Swiss lockdown.
