ABOUT THE ARTIST
SSTR is born as a tattoo-based practice, designed to be the focus of a broad range of artistic dynamics. It sprung directly from the heart of London’s D.I.Y. and underground scene and since 2017 has been striving to elevate the city’s youth culture to the relevance and aesthetic quality of High art manifestations.
SSTR is the brainchild of Mara, Italian-born and London-based creative practitioner. Trained as a traditional painter at the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence, she has later on found in Central Saint Martins, its multinational and multidisciplinary ecosystem, the opportunity to develop her practice in a socially-involved and culturally-rooted dimension.
THE PERFORMANCE
Softpain presents the duality of an underground art practice, the bare process within an aesthetically sublimed space. During the performance, the intimacy of a handpoked tattoo session is extended to the audience, which is allowed to gently break into a unique frame in space and time. Far from being the intrusive practice the techniques tends to be associated with, the performance highlights the slowly-achieved beauty of the process.
