WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE US TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

Rosa Lacavalla is an Italian documentary photographer and visual artist based in Bologna, Italy. She graduated in Art Graphic (Bachelor Degree) and Photography (Postgraduate Degree) at Fine Arts Academy of Bologna in Italy. In the meanwhile, she moved to England to study Photography at Coventry University. In 2016 she worked as an assistant for an internship for the collective Cesura and in 2017 her work titled Focu has been published on EyesOpen! Magazine – Issue #11 dedicated to young talents. She joined various collective exhibitions in different countries, both as a photographer than a video artist, between those the Lishui Photo Festival, PIP Festival in Pingyao (China), the Brighton Festival, Festival Fotografia Europea and so on. Her video artwork titled Vorrei girare il cielo come le rondini has been selected and featured by C41 Magazine and Undercurrent, a collective and art gallery from New York, in 2020. Her investigation focuses on small stories from everyday life, which are often an excuse to talk about something wider, but at the same time much more intimate, in the continuous search for nostalgic poetry.

HOW DID THE COVID-19 BREAKDOWN AFFECT YOUR WORK AS AN ARTIST?

Unfortunately, Covid-19 has affected my professional work and as an artist for the past few months. In particular, I would have participated as an artist in some video art events at a contemporary art gallery and as an author during a photography self-publishing festival. But the events have all been canceled and postponed indefinitely or even to next year. It was difficult to absorb the blow, but after the toughest period, it led me to focus on myself as an individual and on the creation of new artworks.

HAS YOUR WAY OF THINKING/PRODUCING ART CHANGED? IN WHAT WAY?

I tried to work more on photography also being home, but after the first weeks I started to feel “forced”. I used more in the first part of the isolation almost as therapy during my bad moments, but then I felt the need to work on something fresher. So I started experimenting more with videos and it was like having some fresh air again. In this way, having to change the medium, also the way of thinking has had changes and evolution.

ABOUT THE BITE

A sensation of lightness but at the same time of inconsistent heaviness in observing an infinite space such as the sky. The flakes of poplars fly like the thoughts that haunt us in these weeks. We are forced to face and clash with ourselves during isolation. We entrust to the sky, and some to a god, our doubts, our uncertainties, our questions.

They fly like the swallows that bring a surreal spring, come to announce that we will no longer be the same. And upon their arrival, after more than a month waiting by our windows, we are pervaded by a sense of acceptance of our individual and human condition.
