ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born and raised in Southern China, Pju received her MFA in Directing at FAMU in 2018. Pju’s short film The Nettle (2017), a coming-of-age queer drama, premiered at BFI Flare and was selected by many other festivals, for instance Palm Springs Shortfest, and shortlisted for the prestigious Iris Prize.

Pju is preparing her feature debut The Ugly Mandarine with producer Veronika Kührová. The project was selected to Midpoint’s Project Lab and received the Coco award during the pitching at Karlovy Vary FF. Pju was artist in residency at Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai in 2019.

People believe that cicadas do not exist in south Bohemia except the 8 years old boy Matej. After catching a beautiful cicada in the forest, Matej is eager to show his brother Adrian while spots him and his friend Jakub passing through the woods. He follows them to the lake and discovers that Adrain is caught in a peculiar condition as if he was the confusing cicada sealed in Matej’s plastic box..
